When does this pay back?

Payback depends on the cost line and replacement scope

This product's payback depends on your current AWS spend, replacement scope, and runtime environment. Use the bill calculator to identify matching cost lines and a rough savings estimate.

Estimate with your bill

S3-compatible gateway (Helm container for Amazon EKS) that transparently compresses every object, cutting S3 storage bytes 50–80% for compressible data with zero application changes. This edition bills on measured value: per GB of backend storage avoided, per hour, at roughly one third of the avoided S3 Standard cost — the majority of the savings stays with you.

S4 sits between your applications (boto3, aws-sdk, Spark, Trino, DuckDB — anything that speaks S3) and your real S3 bucket, transparently compressing each object with a per-payload codec: CPU zstd for text and logs, GPU nvCOMP for integer and columnar data, passthrough for already-compressed inputs. Same S3 wire protocol, same SigV4 auth, same SDK calls — you only change the endpoint URL, and Range GETs stay fast via a sidecar frame index compatible with Parquet and ORC readers. The on-backend format is open: stop the gateway and objects remain readable with the Apache-2.0 CLI, Python package, or fsspec adapter (no lock-in). Day-2 tooling is built in: s4 estimate (project savings before deploying), s4 migrate (retro-compress existing objects), s4 recompact and s4 maintain, a savings ledger with the s4 savings command, Prometheus metrics and a Grafana dashboard. This listing bills in proportion to delivered value: every hour the gateway meters the storage it is currently avoiding and you pay $0.00001 per GB-saved-hour (≈ one third of S3 Standard). Run exactly one metering replica — the Helm chart refuses replicas>1 while metered savings is enabled.

Highlights

Pay for measured value: billed per GB of backend storage avoided, per hour, at roughly one third of the avoided S3 Standard cost — the majority of the savings stays with you.

Zero application changes: an S3 wire-compatible endpoint (SigV4, multipart, Range GET, server-side encryption). Point your SDK at S4 and keep working.

Open format, no lock-in: objects stay readable without the gateway through Apache-2.0 command-line, Python, and fsspec tooling.

Pricing model

Usage-priced: $0.00001 per GB-saved-hour (metered via AWS Marketplace Metering Service, ≈ one third of S3 Standard) + your own EKS node cost. 14-day free trial, no license keys. Exactly one metering replica (enforced by the Helm chart).
